What Is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is a product derived from the cannabis plant.

There are two main active chemicals (cannabinoids) found in the cannabis plant – THC and CBD. THC is the famous chemical that has psychoactive effects, or in layman’s terms, gets you ‘high’. CBD on the other hand has no psychoactive effects but instead has a lot of really beneficial, medicinal effects.

Research has been conducted on CBD for nearly 80 years, but only recently is it getting the recognition it deserves as a medicine. Because of the negative press surrounding cannabis, the research has been halted along the way and the benefits have been shrouded in the war on drugs.

In this article, we’re going to look at what CBD Oil actually is.

Where Does CBD Oil Come From?

CBD oil comes from the cannabis plant. Cannabis originally comes from East Asia but now grows all over the world because of the demand for it. CBD can either be made from cannabis or hemp. Both cannabis and hemp come from the same plant, just different parts of that plant. Cannabis is often grown for its use as a drug and hemp is more useful for creating fabrics etc. Hemp has a slightly different chemical makeup. The main difference between the two is that cannabis is high in THC and low in CBD, whereas hemp is high in CBD and low in THC.

The Science Behind It

While this might sound far-fetched, our bodies are actually built to respond to cannabinoids. Our brains are packed with cannabinoid receptors, so when we ingest cannabinoids such as CBD or THC, it has an effect. It seems that our bodies and cannabinoids were built for each other in many ways.

Unlike THC, which has an effect on our cognitive abilities, CBD affects our serotonin levels and has actually been seen to repair our brain. Serotonin is the chemical in our brain that affects our mood, sexual desire, digestion, memory and more. That means that CBD has a calming effect and can increase our happiness. That’s why it is so effective in the treatment of anxiety and depression.

What Can It Be Used For?

Now that the medicinal benefits of CBD have been proven, it can be used to treat a wide-range of health conditions. Not only does it have a positive impact on our brain, it has anti-inflammatory properties which make it an excellent natural medicine.

Here are some of the main health conditions treatable with CBD oil:

● Pain and Inflammation
● Psychosis and Schizophrenia
● Anxiety and Depression
● Cancer
● Nausea
● Seizures and Epilepsy
● Diabetes
● Cardiovascular Health

CBD Oil isn’t a cure for all these health conditions. In some cases it can just reduce the symptoms. For more information on these health conditions and CBD, check out our recent article.

A Brief History

Cannabis is one of the oldest recorded agricultural plants. Archaeological digs have dated back agricultural cannabis to the end of the last Ice Age, nearly 12000 years ago. It has been used for fabric, food, medicine and in recreational drug use but only in the last century have we started to really understand its benefits and drawbacks. Since the 1940s, research has been undertaken to really understand cannabis and its two main compounds, THC and CBD. Unfortunately, a lot of this research has been held back because of the implications of cannabis as a drug. This is especially true in the U.S., where there is still a stigma attached to using CBD for medicinal purposes.

Why Isn’t It Used More?

Again, because of the stigma around cannabis, CBD isn’t fully utilized for its powers as a medicine. However, in the U.S. and all around the world there is a push towards more organic healing solutions and CBD oil is at the forefront of this movement. The evidence of its benefits are overwhelming and hopefully, by talking about these benefits, we can push it into the mainstream.

Is It Legal?

CBD oil is legal in all 50 states, but unfortunately it’s not that simple. The legality is based on how the cannabidiol is made. If it is made from hemp it is legal everywhere but if it is made from cannabis then this can change from state to state. If you are worried about the legality, it is worth checking the specific laws in your state.

Where Can You Buy It?

This again depends on where you live. In states where medical marijuana is legal, you can buy it from dispensaries and head shops but if not then you may have to buy it over the internet. There are plenty of reputable shops online that sell cannabis extract and you can normally buy direct from the manufacturer.

What Are Different Forms Of CBD?

CBD oil is the most popular way of using CBD, but there are many more. You can get CBD sprays, tinctures, edibles (like gummy bears) and drops. The best way of ingesting it depends on what health condition you are trying to treat. It is worth researching your specific use for it and finding out what dosage is recommended and what form it comes in.

Common Misconceptions

The most common misconception surrounding this isolate is that it gets you high. This completely depends on what CBD oil you are buying. Some products do have small amounts of THC in them, but sometimes the amount is so small that it won’t have any psychoactive effect. If you are worried about this, then it is probably best to go for an extract that is made from hemp. Always check the packaging and ingredients thoroughly and ask for advice.

The other common misconception surrounding CBD, is that it is a wonder-cure for all health problems. While there is some anecdotal evidence of CBD doing some pretty miraculous things, its powers of healing are not yet fully researched and documented. While the research is still being conducted it is important to think of CBD oil as a really effective natural remedy rather than a wonder-cure that will solve every health condition.
